April Ross

April Ross is only one of the beach volleyball athletes to win medals at least twice in an Olympics. She will be competing in Tokyo for her 3rd Olympic gold medal along with Alix Klineman who is a first time Olympian. Ross is hoping to secure the Olympic debut gold, but she's also hoping to earn more. At 39 and has a long way to go, this could be her final chance. But she's confident top awards are in reach. Ross stated to NBC Boston that if they play their best, or even a good game, she believes the team could win a gold medal. Also, it's an issue of luck. Ross was born in California in Costa Mesa, California in 1982. She grew up in Costa Mesa along with her parents and sister. At Newport Harbor High School, she competed in numerous sports. The prep sports she played included indoor volleyball along with basketball as well as running and track. While she did well in indoor volleyball however, it was evident that her performance was above normal. When she played in her time at the high school level, according to her college biography she played as a middle-blocker, outside-hitter and setter. She was awarded by the Gatorade National Circle of Champions Player of the year in 1999 for her achievements. Her skills in volleyball earned her the Orange County Athlete of the Year award in the year 2000. Ross and Klineman are continuing to play from 2017. But, Ross played a significant role in the world of beach volleyball before joining the duo. Actually, Ross has won several significant tournaments during her time together with two other partners. One of them is a legend. Jennifer Kessy coached her from 2007 until 2013. Alongside Kessy Ross, she was a major force on the international stage, claiming an international title in 2009. At the 2012 Olympic Games, they were awarded a gold medal. Misty Maytreanor (Jennings) and Misty Maytreanor clinched gold beating them to it. Ross Jennings took over for May-Treanor after she retired. The duo went on to earn bronze in beach volleyball at the Rio Olympics in the year 2016. Ross was a player for the USC Trojans in college after graduating from high school. This was an impressive run for Ross at the college level. In 2000 she was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and NCAA Freshman of the Year. She was also named an All-American. The Trojans had the chance to get to the Final Four with her help. Her personal tragedy was a crushing loss in her sophomore year however she was able to return as an All-American. Over her final 2 seasons with the Trojans team, she led the team to win a national championship every year. She was a great volleyball player and won the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the top female volleyball player in the NCAA. Ross was a major in international relations at USC. Margie Ross did not get to see her daughter's climb to the beach volleyball spotlight. Ross's mother died of breast carcinoma in 2001. Ross had just become an undergraduate student in the second year at USC. But she still keeps her mother in her the heart. Margie remains a constant source of inspiration for her both on and off the beach.
