Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. in film, music and television Queen Latifah has won 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. a police officer. Latifahs parents split up after Latifah, then ten years old. Latifah lived within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah was the stage name she used when she was eight years old. The word means extremely delicate in Arabic. Latifah's 5'10" height allowed her to be a formidable performer at high school. The song she sang was"Home" from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her journey into beatboxing. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the track and was signed by Latifah in 1988 for the release of her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
